The budget session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly began on Monday with Governor C.V. Ananda Bose delivering his inaugural address, where he praised the state’s law and order situation and the success of the Bengal Global Business Summit. He highlighted the government's efforts in ensuring employment and housing through schemes like Karmashree and Bangla Bari, stating, "Despite financial inadequacy and central allocation shortages, the state government has not backed down from its promises." He also expressed confidence in Bengal’s leadership.
The Governor further commended the peaceful conduct of major festivals, including Durga Puja, Eid, Christmas, Chhath Puja, and the Gangasagar Mela, saying, "The law and order situation in the state has been peaceful." However, his remarks triggered protests from the opposition, with Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shouting in an attempt to interrupt his speech. The opposition contested the Governor’s statements, citing alleged law-and-order concerns and governance failures.
The Assembly witnessed intense disruptions as opposition leaders raised slogans and objected to the Governor’s praise of the government. The session, meant to set the legislative agenda, turned chaotic as the ruling and opposition benches clashed over the state’s governance and financial management. With the budget session now underway, heated debates and political confrontations are expected in the coming days.
